WHY IS FREEDOM AND ANONYMITY ON THE INTERNET IMPORTANT?

Anonymity vs. Privacy- the Subtle Differences. 0004_socialmedia_goodbadugly_color.jpg 0004_socialmedia_goodbadugly_color.jpg

Sometimes these two terms can become confused with each other because they are similar concepts, but have one difference. Privacy is no one being able to see what you do, but they can know who you are. Anonymity is no one knowing who you are, but seeing what you do. While anonymity has a plethora of great uses for people needing to freely speak their mind while staying protected, it can also help facilitate nefarious activities as well.

"THE DEMAND FOR ANONYMITY ONLINE HAS BECOME A HIGHLY DEBATED TOPIC AS OF LATE, UNDERSTANDABLY SO."

    THE GOOD
There’s a fine line between the good and bad aspects of anonymity on the Internet. One of the great aspects of anonymity is that it provides safety to the individual. Anonymity gives people freedom of expression without direct consequences, as no one knows who the individual is. This can be useful in so many situations. For example, there are a few countries that heavily restrict Internet usage, and heavily monitor what their citizens are doing on the web. If this is occurring in a country where citizens are in conflict with their government, anonymity gives political dissidents a safe way to communicate with each other, journalists, activist groups and more without suffering repercussions form their government. Anonymity is a huge proponent of safety in freedom of expression.

    THE BAD
Unfortunately, not all people use anonymity for good. Anonymity can easily help facilitate actions such as cyberbullying, stalking and encouragement of Internet trolls (people who intentionally harass others online just for the fun of it). These types of people are just normal Internet users that take advantage of hiding behind a computer screen anonymously for malicious purposes.

    THE UGLY
Since there is such a demand for Internet anonymity, there are a plethora of freely available tools that people can use to help achieve it. Unfortunately, like in real life, not all people use their powers for good. Anonymity is a crucial tool for cybercriminals and without it, they can be apprehended by law enforcement much easier.

The demand for anonymity online has become a highly debated topic as of late, understandably so. On the one hand, anonymity grants individuals their right to privacy as well as their safety. On the other, it can also be abused by allowing individual people to perform deceitful actions towards other persons, as well as help facilitate massive amounts of cybercrime.
